Indonesia

16 Percent of Indonesians live below the extreme poverty line, 70% in rural areas. (World Bank)

307 Deaths for every 100,000 live births. (World Bank)

Out of a population of 234 million, more than 32 million Indonesians currently live below the poverty line and approximately half of all households remain clustered around the national poverty line set at 200,262 rupiahs per month ($22).
Employment growth has been slower than population growth. Indonesia has a highly uneven distribution of income. The poorest fifth account for just 8 percent of consumption, while the richest fifth account for 45 percent. Average income today is about US$650 a year. An access to improved sanitation facilities currently stands at 68 percent of the population.

Regional disparities also persist; eastern Indonesia lags behind other parts of the country, notably Java. Furthermore, 17.35 % of rural people are poor, compared to 10.7 percent of urban people.
The rate of poverty reduction is slower than hoped, partly because there are not enough opportunities for poor workers to move into better jobs in the formal and non-agricultural sectors. Labor is one of the few assets of the poor. If provided with a good job, they have a chance to earn their way out of poverty. (World Bank)
